Resume Help

Last night after I finished blogging I finally found the motivation to begin tackling my resume. It’s really rough and not quite finished but at least I finally was able to throw some stuff up on the computer.
Now, I have to ask for a favor…kind of a big one.
See, I bought a few books on resumes as I was (and well, still am) pretty clueless on the process. While they were helpful in some regards they were geared more towards people working in tradition businesses. There just weren’t any examples for someone who’s worked in the social service field like I have and so I had nothing to really compare it to. The closest example was for a recent college graduate, but honestly, my college career wasn’t much to write home about. I did well grade wise but as I went to a liberal arts school my classes were kind of all over the place. I didn’t have a chance to join clubs since I was a commuter student and the meeting times were usually on days I didn’t have classes thus, I would usually be working.
The point of all this is…I’m desperate for a set of fresh eyes and a fresh perspective to possibly look over what I have and give me a bit of advice. My family is even more clueless in regards to resumes as I am so asking them would be pretty much pointless.
So if anyone out there might be able to assist me I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it. I really hate asking for favors like this, so the fact that I’m sitting here, typing this says quite a bit of the desperation I’m feeling.

I’m not going to be all full of myself and call myself an ‘expert’ by any means. However, I’d like to think I’m pretty good with resumes (and I’m a really good editor), and I’ve also taken a few classes which involved writing them. So, I’d be more than happy to help out. Just send me an e-mail if you are interested (my e-mail is listed on my blog).

Hey, send me your resume & I will try and help. I can also send you mine if you’d like an example. The best advice I have heard it “less is more”…basically you don’t want to tell them everything about yourself, just the greatest hits, so they want to interview you and find out more, instead of having them think, “I already know who this person is, I’m not interested”.

Include any type of voluntary work as that counts as experience as well.

I was just about to tell you that Misty might be able to help you out with it, but it looks like she already beat me to it.

I’ll be a pair of eyes for you. I had a job once where resume consulting was one of my tasks…. of course those were mostly IT related, not social work, but if I can help I will.

You can always email me if you want, I don’t mind.
I hate writing resumes as well… I try to keep mine up to date but yeah, it’s a difficult process. I didn’t find books helped much. Too many advices, too many rules. I do my own and so far it worked fine.

I am not a resume expert when it comes to current trends, but a few years back I worked as a job coach for the State of Idaho. I am pretty busy right now, but if you want to email your resume, I’ll take a peek. My email is on my blog.
